I’m always so anxious to start playing in the dirt come April 1st..It should just automatically be Spring on that day, don’t ya think?! After all most of the greenhouses open on that day around here..so I’m always ready to plant! Unfortunately Spring in Michigan can be very unpredictable. So this early in the season I always try and plant in containers that I can take in when the weather switches back-and-forth from cold to warm, and keeping them under a porch helps too.
Also, planting cold hardy plants such as pansies can weather the coldest of temps, but in case of a freeze, having it planted and something mobile is best. This cute little toolbox makes for the perfect option. I picked it up at a thrift store a couple of years back..too cute!
I also planted some herbs about a week ago that I could sit right outside the kitchen on the patio.
Again.. too cute, right!? I was buying herbs at Lowes and found this FUN hanging tiered planter in the garden center. This also works perfectly for moving inside when needed.
I purchased everything I needed right at Lowe’s.. the herbs, the soil and the planter.
I did use an organic potting soil because we’ll be eating the herbs. Each of the hanging containers already had drainage holes. I filled them with dirt and looked up which herbs preferred to be planted together.
I started with cilantro and basil on the bottom because they were good companion plants.
In the center one, I planted mint and then added a couple pansies on each side. I planted the mint by itself because it can tend to take over easily. The pansies will get tired fairly quickly in the heat of the summer and by that time the mint will want to take over anyways.
I added the lavender and the rosemary to the top planter because they are taller. After giving them a good drink I added these cute little garden stakes from antique market decor, but I found these similar ones here.
Such a FUN addition.
Of course the funnest part was trying to figure out what to write on the front of these cute chalkboards. AND…as you can see I’m already enjoying some Mint in my Mojito!
Now, let’s get into some more flowers. Pansies always end up everywhere around here in the early spring because they can handle the cold so well!
I ended up forgetting about another CUTE window/window box I had gotten at a little consignment shop.
I decided to hang it up above this table and chair set and plant in it as well. I gathered a few more cold hardy flowers and went to work.
It had some pretty big drainage holes in it already, so I put coffee filters over them so the dirt wouldn’t fall through when watering.
I ended up adding plastic in there too so the wet dirt wouldn’t rot the box..I did cut holes in the plastic as well in the same spots.
I started with Ranunculus, another cold hardy spring flower. I had bought three pots of them and spaced them equally out.
In the remaining space I added Viola‘s, Alyssum and creeping Jenny for some spillers.
Might as well use up the rest of the flowers and fill a FUN enamel jug!
So here’s a pretty cute scene, right?! I love how it turned out.
More cuteness, galvanized pots with a little tray to protect the table. Like I said.. Pansies will likely pop up everywhere around here.
HAPPY PLANTING FRIENDS!
