Container gardening is the perfect solution for those residing in limited spaces or seeking to introduce diversity into their home or outdoor spaces. Whether you have a small balcony, a rooftop, a compact or expansive backyard, container gardening allows you to create a lush and vibrant oasis.
What is Container Gardening?
Container gardening is a way to grow plants in pots instead of in the ground. It gives gardeners more control over important things like how much sunlight, water, and heat the plants get. By using containers, you can make sure the plants have the best conditions to grow and stay healthy.
7 Types of Garden Container Pots
When it comes to container gardening, there is a wide variety of containers available that can create an ideal growing environment for your plants. Here are some popular container types to consider:
- Terracotta/Clay pots: These classic reddish-brown clay pots are a timeless choice. Opt for glazed terracotta pots if possible, as unglazed ones tend to be porous and require more frequent watering.
- Window boxes: Perfect for adding charm to the exterior of your home, window boxes attach to window sills and provide a lovely space for colorful flowers, herbs, and edible plants. They come in various materials such as plastic, wood, fiberglass, and metal.
- Hanging baskets: Hanging baskets offer excellent drainage and aeration for plants. However, it’s important to consider the wind factor when placing them, as they can be susceptible to damage in windy environments.
- Plastic pots: Among the most affordable and lightweight options, plastic pots are versatile and retain moisture well. It’s worth noting that certain plastics may release chemicals into the soil, so exercise caution when growing edible plants in plastic containers.
- Metal planters: If you’re seeking a durable and modern container style, metal planters are an excellent choice. They are long-lasting and less prone to breakage compared to clay pots. However, be cautious about placing them in full sun as metal containers can heat up rapidly, potentially causing soil dryness and root damage.
- Concrete pots: Attractive, durable, and affordable They can be found at local shops or trendy stores, offering a good environment for plant growth. While larger sizes can be expensive and they are heavy to move, their concrete construction makes them a permanent addition to your garden.
- AquaPots: A new concept in self-watering containers invented by Jack Barnwell (an award-winning landscape architect). AquaPots are an all-in-one system.
Some Favorite Garden Container Pots
When selecting containers for your plants, consider the specific needs of each plant and the growing conditions of your space. Choose containers that provide adequate drainage, appropriate size, and material suitable for the plant’s requirements.
By carefully selecting the right containers, you can create an optimal growing environment and set the stage for successful container gardening.
8 Tips for Container Gardening
Container gardening is a versatile style of home gardening that offers great flexibility if done correctly. Here are some essential tips to ensure successful container planting:
- Enhance your potting soil with nutrients: If your potting mix lacks essential nutrients, you may need to supplement it with fertilizers. Different plants have varying fertilizer needs, so it’s important to research and understand the specific fertilization requirements of each plant you’re growing. Note: I use a good potting soil amended with a slow-release fertilizer + fertilize with a water solvable once a week on top of that.
- Select the appropriate container size: The size of a plant’s root system determines the size of the container it requires. You can mix multiple small plants in a large pot or create focal points with larger plants surrounded by smaller plant combinations.
- Choose the right plants for the right conditions: When planting, ensure you select plants that are well-suited to your local climate, as well as considering factors such as sunlight and shade requirements.
- Employ the “thriller, filler, spiller” technique: When combining multiple plants in a large container, follow the “thriller, filler, spiller” approach. Choose a tall, eye-catching plant (the thriller) such as geraniums or coleus. Add medium-height, billowy plants (the filler) like verbena, salvia, wax begonia, or lantana. Finally, include trailing plants (the spiller) that cascade over the container’s edge, such as creeping zinnia, creeping Jenny, petunia, or sweet potato vine.
- Create tiers with small flowerpots: Utilize vertical space by arranging multiple small flowerpots in tiers. Stack them on crates, stairs, or ledges for an appealing display. Fill the pots with colorful flowers like pansies, lobelias, calibrachoas, and marigolds to add a whimsical touch.
- Incorporate an automatic drip system: Simplify watering by installing an automated drip-irrigation system. This system ensures consistent and direct watering to the plant roots, promoting healthy growth and eliminating fluctuations in soil moisture.
- Ensure proper drainage: It is crucial to have drainage holes in your containers. Without adequate drainage, excess water can accumulate, leading to waterlogged soil and potentially harming your plants. If needed, drill drainage holes in containers that don’t have them (excluding terracotta or ceramic pots).
- Deadheading is always a good idea: This is the process of pruning old growth and seed heads. Deadheading is very simple. As blooms fade, pinch or cut off the flower stems below the spent flowers and just above the first set of full, healthy leaves.
